Here's the best I could do/find with my amd4000+ ; Nvidia 6600gt (latest drivers) and soundblaster audigy 2 equipped computer :

PulseAudio screws up the sound (crackling) and makes the game graphics a lot more choppy.
Killing it, for instance, will make the game run more smoothly, but without sound.
Not a solution, but a step in the good direction.

Also, starting the game in full screen mode doesn't work. Maybe I need to check for different resolutions but the best bet right now is to start the game "windowed". I had to edit the settings file to do so.

At least the blank screen and XServer crash are out of the way.

Starting the game from the command line shows Cg compiler errors :

Cg compiler terminated due to fatal errorPenumbra: Overture exited unexpectedly, please check

Also try running
ulimit -c unlimited
And re-running Penumbra and try and recreate the error
then submit the generated core file or stack trace
