But I couldn't find the specific issue I'm having anywhere else on this forum, and wanted to bring it to FG's attention in case they hadn't seen it before.

Thanks again!

This is quite a strange issue.. What specific mac hardware are you using? The issue itself seems quite odd. And the way Mac OS X's dual graphics support works is that as soon as any application creates an OpenGL context it switches to the discrete graphics. so it's not based on GPU demand at all.. An application CAN, however, explicitly state that it supports both/dynamic switching. But games don't bother with that as it's more challenging to programSmile (e.g. having the graphics card switch while your application is running).

A few things for you to do. Can you make sure you have all the latest updates applied? Also cold-reboot the entire computer. (that is completely power it off and back on again)
Also can you install a piece of software called gfxCardStatus ( http://gfx.io/ ). this software will allow you to FORCE applications to use either the integrated or the discreet card.. Try running penumbra in both modes and report back.

Multiple Macs running 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9.
