I think a lot of us have a selective memory. Tongue Mandus was indeed in plenty of danger. Not just from the pigmen, but himself, as well.
[spoiler] Seeing as he ultimately took his own life. Also wading through pretty much every bodily fluid in the human body makes being Mandus a horrible prospect.[\spoiler]
I'd have to see myself as Justine or the girl from Slender. Just because Slenderman really isn't that scary to me and Justine is in more control of her surroundings than even Philip.
