downloaded and installed the lates directx 9 , still getting the error. thanks for trying to help.

Please go to:
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Amnesia\MainDemo\

And delete hpl.log

Then start the game, then when you get the error, hit OK, and find the hpl.log again, and post the contents here.

Did what you asked me to do and all there is in the maindemo is crash flag 0kb and hpl_update 0kb also.

Hmm... Try deleting the hpl.log in the game's own folder, then do the same.
