In-game screen blacks out after escape from Alpha

hi all --

I'm hoping someone knows the fix for this.

I'm reaching the end of the game ( I think ), and I've just finished escaping from Alpha after feeding the WAU my arm. so far the game has run wonderfully and I haven't had any troubles with display issues, etc; HOWEVER, as soon as the game loads me in Phi, the screen is black. I can still move around and jump and turn my flashlight on, and the pause menu works fine.

I tried deleting save files and resetting my user_settings config file, but nothing seems to work. I doubt it's a graphical thing, as the game has worked fine up until this point, as previously said.

does anyone know the fix for this issue? I've looked around, but found nothing so far. I'd rather not replay from the very beginning UNTIL I can finish the game through once, but ...
