No, it does not look like a browser problem: the game tries, after I've entered the serial number, to connect to the hosts tpmaint.tages-protection.com or active.tages-protection.com to get this activation code.

This is currently impossible as the DNS servers who translate those names into IP addresses do not respond:

$ whois tages-protection.com |grep nserver
nserver: ns3692.ovh.net
nserver: ns.ovh.net

$ host active.tages-protection.com ns.ovh.net
active.tages-protection.com A record not found at ns.ovh.net, server failure

$ host active.tages-protection.com ns3692.ovh.net
Nameserver ns3692.ovh.net not responding
active.tages-protection.com A record not found at ns3692.ovh.net, try again

So the technical root of the problem is ovh.net which is the DNS provider of tages-protection.com who does some service for FrictionalGames or at least Gamersgate.

As you surely have some kind of contract with them you could give them a phone call asking for a quick problem correction!
