There was death in the preview too, but it was not properly implemented then. The game is a bit harsher now, especially if you are not careful.

Really hard to strike a balance between having proper gameplay consequences, without getting too much trial & error like play. I think the system the game has now (and will have on release) works really well and should instill the proper dread and fear of death.
