Anyhow, the install went fine but when I go to run any of the games in the trillogy, the screen flashes black for a split second and then returns to the desktop. Any suggestions?

P.S.

When I look at the hpl.log file for Requiem I get

Init low level graphics
Setting video mode: 800 x 600 - 32 bpp
ERROR: Could not set display mode setting a lower one!
FATAL ERROR: Unable to initialize display

The first time I played the game I changed in the menu the resolution in-game to 1600x1200, and when I restarted the game I had a similar problem, blank screen and return to desktop (or even frozen game). My desktop resolution were 1024x768, and when I changed this resolution to 1600x1200 (the same resolution I've set the Penumbra games) I played without problems in Ubuntu 9.10 64 bits.

If you haven't solved your problem, try to change your desktop resolution. It worked for me. Good luck!
