Where do monsters go while Daniel is hiding?

Do they get depressed they can't find Daniel and jump in a lake?
But one looked in the Guest Room and then it sounded as though he opened the door.

A Grunt chased me once in the Refinery and almost caught me so i hid behind some boxes. Then he just walked out of the room and disappeared like nothing even happened.
