Do you have the game on Steam? If so, I recommend running a Steam File Integrity Check. You can do that by following Problem I here: https://www.frictionalgames.com/forum/thread-30585.html

If that does not change anything, I recommend posting your hpl.log file by following Problem X at the same link. It's certainly a very strange issue!
