I use plain old Windows Movie Maker if it's just simple stuff like splicing clips together and the like.

But if you want to do anything more advanced and need a free program, VirtualDub wouldn't be bad for you to look into. If you can spend money, Sony Vegas is a great program, too.

Tried virtual dub, don't wanna learn it looks like something made with linux
Movie maker doesn't keep the ratios when you save the videos and puts a thick ass border around the clip

What else?

I'd totally recommend you VirtualDub, though its a bit more professional and you may need some time to get the knowhow.

I was using WMM and switched to Virtual Dub some months ago. It's not as user friendly as WMM, but I get better video quality for approximately the same video size.
But most important: I can do batch rendering with Virtual Dub, which makes me save a loooot of time!

Currently I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum.
But I'm planning on buying the Pro version.

RE: Calling on youtubers

Someone should explain to me how I take x-number of raw recorded AVI's, put them into virtualdub, merge them, and compress them.

The FAQ's on the site are useless

Windows Live Mover Maker. Simple enough to get what I want done. Although, there are times when I wish I had Sony Vegas. Can't crack it though, keygens are illegal and I'd rather not run the risk of getting a virus.
