Stuck after picking up gasoline can in storage room

I can't get back up into the ventilation shaft even after I arrange the two wooden boards close to the shelf and jump on top of them. I always get killed by the steam even when I try to crouch past it. I also tried placing the wood boards opposite the steam opening to block it but can't make them stand correctly. How do I get out of this room?

the vents really is the only way. make the pallet like a ramp.

You can't block the steam, however you can place the wood boards very close to it, jump on the wood board and jump over the steam.

ive seen someone do that, but I just put the pallet up like a ramp and go on the shelve, and into the vent.
