I don't think that is a good idea actually, even though a lot of custom stories have jump scares they shouldn't be categorized or placed in a specific place in a list, I think that almost every creator is working hard with their custom stories. And it does take a lot of time to make a custom story as well.

I'm not trying to sound like a baby, but can someone be as generous to compose a list of custom stories that have no jump scares, or very settle ones? I admit that I cannot play a custom story with jump scares without jumping up and banging my knee on my desk. I'm just wondering if there are any out there that don't contain any jump scares. I'm not trying to start another argument, I'm just asking politely, thank you!

I don´t think that you can judge a custom story only by the number of jumpscares used in it. There is no maximum for the amount that you can use in one story, what limits you is that you can only have so many jumpscares based on your skill as a mapper and scripter. A custom story using many jumpscares can be great as long as the one who made it created an intresting story that the player care about, made the maps heavily atmospheric and that the jump scares are original and works with the story.
What people have to learn is that you must know how to use jumpscares and what to use. By using a jumpscare you throw the player into a sort of climax in the gameplay and you need to keep the player on edge and in stress for a while after it. And, most important, after using the scare you must be able to top it later in the game. Take a look on Yahtzees videos about God of War and you´ll see what I´m talking about.

See, I totally agree with this. I think a map can have as many jump-scares as the creator likes, however... I do think that just throwing a body at somebody and having a screaming sound effect is pretty cheap and ruins what could have been an epic map, simply because the creator was too lazy to sort the scripting out properly. People should always aim to impress with their maps; anybody can script so that a body and sound effect occurs when somebody enters a certain area, but it takes thought and originality to be able to create a fantastic map and use the scripting system to it's full potential.

I also agree with the guys above me. As long as the creator can incorporate the tension and terror before each jump scare, deliver the climatic horror/shit your pants moment, and follow it up with a severely tense, and scary experience for the next few moments, AND repeat this in a unique, more powerful way each time. He/she can put as many jump scares in the story as they wish.

The dificulty is making it unique each time. You don't neccessarily have to make it unexpected, the build up to the jump scare is almost always the best part of horror, and it's perfectly fine not to have the jump scare 'crescendo' at the end, or at least delay it for a while, because the tension and terror is the part which really gets your blood pumping, at least for me anyways. RE: No more Jump scare maps....it is getting unoriginal.

A monster turning a corner is fine. That's not what I call a jump-scare. A jump-scare is this:
"You're cowering in the darkness in an abandoned mansion, where a deformed masked ghost monster tortured and strung up 80 people, whose screams you can still hear echoing through these halls.
SCREAMING MY LITTLE PONY IN YOUR FACE!!!
There is no trace of the sudden pony that just hit you. It is obvious that the sadistic killer is nearby, and you can hear him sharpening hi-.
SCREAMING MY LITTLE PONY IN YOUR FACE, AGAIN!!!"

1. Any suspense that you've built up to this point, will pop and vanish.
2. Most of the scares don't make any sense what so ever. It's just a guy and a scream. He didn't come from anywhere, he has no reason for being there, and he presents no actual threat to the player, making him a screaming drama queen.
3. It removes all immersion, by telling you in the most blatant way, that the designer is trying to scare the player. Any story that you've built up, will be ignored beyond that point, because the story doesn't explain the weird scares.
4. It's cheap and overdone. People want to experience new and clever things.
5. It is not horror. Being startled is not feeling horror. It's a way to scare somebody, but it's not a way to make the player feel horror, just as Gorn (blood and gore) can horr-ify people, or make them feel horr-ible, without making them feel horr-or. (Note that a few people can't feel horror at all.)

I know I posted this elsewhere on the forum, but bear with me.

Would something like this interest you? I don't do cheap jump scares, hell I hardly scare at all, but I do try to keep that atmosphere up so that when you do get scared, you feel threatened by it, because it doesn't happen every 5 seconds.

Could you give me an example of a jump-scare that fits into a story?
I know of one in The Calling, where just seeing a normal black cat will flash huge cat eyes on the screen, every time. No reason for it what-so-ever, and there was no need for it either. The player grows annoyed and angry with the cat pretty fast.
