RE: Small horror games

I started playing the Penumbra series again last night. Man, I can't believe how freaking scary it still is, even when I KNOW there's nothing there.

Played the beta of Slender: The Arrival again recently. I'm still impressed with it so far, the original never got to me. But the visual improvements and the improved movement/sound helped bring this one together. I'm looking forward to playing the full game on tuesday. Well, if I'm not absolutely distracted by BioShock.

It pretty much perfected minimalistic horror and literally rapes all the others in every single way. You definitely need a good attention span to really enjoy it, though.

I played it a long time ago, that was my first SCP

OOOooooohhhhh the nightmares I got from playing that game. So simple yet so damn scary.

I played Slender: The Haunt recently, it was quite creepy, but I can't get to the last place in the game for some reason, even after collecting all the notes.

I quite enjoyed a free indie horror game recently, I think it was called dreams of the blood red moon or something? It had a focus on jumpscares and chasing but it worked because it maintained a pretty tense atmosphere.

Skinwalker is a short, horror game made in RPG maker; it takes less than an hour to finish. I totally recommend it.

RE: Small horror games

I Can't Escape is an interesting little game. I'm not sure if it really qualifies as horror...and it is very, very short. But it can be played directly in the browser, so why not give it a quick look while you're here? Wink

Personally, I found it rather scary, at least on my first playthrough. The mechanics it uses to evoke a feeling of increasing helplessness and panic are simple and don't engage for very long on their own, but they work quite nicely as an experiment of sorts...maybe inspiration for a bigger and more complex game.

(If it doesn't work, make sure your flash plugin is up to date and that hardware acceleration is activated, since it's in 3D)
