RE: Rapture's Random Models

They are good, but they look a bit like plastic, don't you think? Plus, they are a bit High-poly for it's size. The fork, for example. That's highpoly for the size.

Good models though. I like them.

They looked a bit cartoony to me. Also, the poly is just too high. Look at the fork. Such poly for a small thing.

You don't have to be that afraid about polycount. Rendering 50 polygons is apparently the same as rendering 300.

Fork looks fine. I would spend some more time on the texturing of the other objects : ]

RE: Rapture's Random Models

About the Fork and the models, when I labeled "### Faces" that's the Polycount the LevelEditor says it has (Should I label it as Tris or Polycount, to avoid confusion?). I don't think 232 is very big, the "Entities>Kitchen>butcher_knife" has 202 polygons and it's relatively the same size as the Fork.

I guess you could say it's cartoony, I don't know how to do that in-depth texturing. I use to practice drawing when I was younger, but I used simple darker color shading for my art, like a comic/manga.

RE: Rapture's Random Models

The models look fine, no complaints about the polycounts at all. Normal map baking looks good too.

The diffuse maps do however need some love, right now they're just solid colours, add some metal textures onto that and try baking some Ambient Occlusion into the diffuse too.

If you head over to Cgtextures.com you can find lots of good sources for textures.

Optionaly you can head over to quixel.se and download a trial for DDO, which is a plugin for photoshop which alows your to automaticly create good looking diffuse textures by simply loading a normal map and telling the program what kind of details you want.

Keep up the good work.

food tray looks really good.

If you can make some food or something or a pack of milk you know...
there are less of those for an amnesia custom story and might be a good thing for a kitchen in a mansion.

RE: Rapture's Random Models

I wanted to give an update because I've been slowly working on new models and I'd rather release a couple of them at a time instead of a single model. (Ya, I'm taking forever!)
A lot still need some texture clean-ups, proper DDS files and tweaks.

Tree (90% done)

Rock (100% done)

Rock Wall (99% done)

Sloped Rock (99% done)

Red Mushroom (99% done)

Hollow Log (99%)
Spoiler below!

Twin Halogen Lamp (100% Done, but you will need to redo the light/billboard attachments because I can't make anything look good for it.)

====
Couple of notes...

(1) For the tree, I used a 2048x2048 texture because at 1024x1024, it looked like crap on the tree and I didn't like it at all.

I tried to use the UV space as best I could, the main body of the tree was my priority and I used as much space as I could and fitted the rest of the tree's UV in order of importance.
But even at 1024x1024 the texture didn't look good at all. I don't know if I'm missing anything, but any tips would be great.

(2) I like sculpting details in models (Example is the WIP Hollow Log), and the normals work great. But once I apply a texture on, the normals are barely noticeable. I try flipping the normals on and off to see the change but all I can tell is just a shift of shadows.
I'm using a wood bark texture from cgtextures because I don't know how to make my own that looks realistic.

Am I doing something wrong?

(3) No ETA's on release of these models, I can never follow up with ETA's. So just know what you can come to expect, sometime in the near future.

@Venomz - I can do something like that later, add some basic fluff props for the kitchens and stuff.
