Why not just watch a walkthrough on youtube and see if something is missing in your steps?

Have you gone down the stairs in the main hall and opened the door? Are you standing in a corridor with red matter blocking the path? That's where you want to pour the acid.

I already pinpointed that earlier -- thanks for pointing the exact location. But if the staircase in the lab is not destroyed yet, he/she is doing it wrong.
