Interesting, it didn't do that for me when my Internet connection dropped the other day and I wanted to play a game. From all that I've read about Steam's offline mode it does appear to be a little ........ erratic.

That's true, but it still requires internet for me at least. If it can't connect to the internet when I press go to offline mode, it will just shut off. (Which is incredibly stupid.)

You'll never be able to play Steam games without internet.
It's even required for the installation.

But let's stop Steam discussion. I think it shouldn't be the content of this thread.

RE: Pre-ordered but disspointed

Steam isn't bad. You don't need to struggle with CD keys. Just log in (wherever), click to download & install then play. Beats having to find your disk and typing the product key tenfold.
The only pita is that you can't install a game when you have no internet.

DRM? Pfff, retail releases also have anti-piracy measures and you can't play unless you find & put the disk in everytime, that's far more annoying.

BTW, you only need to be online for the installation, you can play offline and without internet as much as you want. In a world where we are connected to broadband 24/7 (at least most of us) this is a non-issue IMO, and if it is, you can buy it from FrictionalGames and put the downloaded file on a stick. Alternatives exist and Steam is certainly not the devil.

That is not correct. You are able to play your games, even some multiplayer games with bots, in offline mode. Jesus, get your facts right before you say something like that.

Deep One is correct. Let's not say wrong stuff about Steam and btw it's a great game platform. Who are you kidding now? The things it offers are amazing. Also, offline should in theory work indefinitely. Sometimes there are bugs according to steam support that can cause internet to be required when in offline mode.

All you need to do is log in once to verify the computer, then you can use steam in offline mode.

And the steam sales are fantastic, that's not something that could ever happen if it wasn't digital.
