The Evil Within - Announced!

Hey there,

A little while ago Bethesda announced their new project: The evil within. This is a survival horror game made by Shinji Mikami. All I can hope is that he isn't going to fuck this up EA style with micro transactions and having you to buy the ending to the game. The trailer was aweful. You didn't saw any gameplay just the basic horror stuff. If I want to see that, I'll to go the cinema and buy a ticket to any horror movie.
The screenshots are decent. Too bad they're going to add guns in the game which makes it less a 'survival' horror game and just another regular horror game. Even though Mikami said this in an interview:
"With this game, we are aiming for a pure form of survival horror, the gameplay you see in the survival-horror genre has changed with the times, and I think right now it leads more towards action than it did before. So we're trying to avoid that. To be honest, it's hard to make survival horror work as a game. Should you emphasize the entertainment aspect and focus on the fun of killing enemies? Or should you try to aim for more of a creeping sort of terror? It's hard to strike a balance, but with this game, we're trying to place our weight primarily on the horror aspects."
I did saw some creepy stuff and I can't say I'm not anxious for this game. I'll just have to wait for more screenshots and/or gameplay. I really hope they remove the gun so it won't become any CoD zombie z0mg shooter and more of a survival horror game. They might give you 2 or 3 bullets but still, a gun isn't a smart idea.

RE: The evil within

I have to say the direction visual wise looks interesting, but I'll probably hold off judgment until I know more about the actual gameplay.

Something that upset me about this game is that in an interview with one of the devs he explicitly states, "We don't want to make the game too scary that people will throw down their controller, and stop playing."

Doesn't mean it might not be a good game, but I just wanted to see devs push horror to the limit...although strictly speaking that's not very wise market wise, because you seriously are going to have people too scared to play it.

This is just the devs trying to make as much money from a game as possible instead of trying to create a awesome/scary game for the horror supporters. They're trying to aim towards wider audience instead towards the fans.
I'm not saying it's a good thing, and I'd love to see how far they can push it, it's just to be expected.

Yeah certainly! For a game with such a huge budget they have to find a way to properly earn their money back.

I just hope they can find that unique "balance", and "twist" to make the game the best for both worlds!

Like you said it's way to early to start judging the game and I agree that the game hasn't gotten to me yet, but I hope it does once we learn more about it. However I don't think that it is a bad idea to have a gun in the game, keep in mind I'm not familiar with how they plan to implement it. A gun in a horror game doesn't in my opinion make it a bad horror game, it doesn't even have to make it less horror. In fact, if implemented correctly, having a gun might even make this game more scary since now you know that you might be able to defend yourself. Unlike if you wouldn't have a gun and you'd know that no matter what just leg it in the other direction and hide. With a gun you'll have to consider options and make quick decisions under stress. But again, it all depends on how they intend to use it.

The Evil Within

Basically a thread based on the discussion of the upcoming horror game "The Evil Within". It claims it will be very scary, It's going to be a third person survival horror oriented to the Silent Hill style. I don't know if you ever played SH but it's pretty scary (for a while). For me personally I never really liked third person survival horror games, but there might be die-hard Dead Space ish game fans out there willing to give this game a tryAnyways, this is a major project as big as Outlast and Amnesia so I think it might diserve a discussion thread.

Although since the thread is a bit old, I'll leave this one open, and see if any newcomers have thoughts on it Smile

Also moderately new trailer:

I already stated my thoughts in that other thread, but I feel this has actual potential to be scary because from what I see it will deal with much more disturbing, and supernatural elements which can very likely prey off of a player's fear of unknown.
