Well, that's his decision. There are lots of options:
Streeboat: If you want to make the cooler results as possible, and being able to do monsters for Amnesia, use Maya. It's very complicated, but it's worth it by what I've heard.
Blender is a good way to go if you just want to do simple stuff.

Saw this thread and somehow worked it into my new conversion. Still working on layout and stuff but here is a quick WIP

Well this isn't much to go on anything yet, but I want to make it all out of my own models in the end. Hooray for crappy textures, and more to come!
But to explain it, it's essentially going to be a floating village in the sky.

A mysterious piano is said to be hiding here, you see it?
There's also two chairs if you are bored and want to search for them.
