I just watched Pacific Rim myself just today. Just got back actually.
...it is one of the stupidest, ridiculous over the top...but also coolest movie I've seen in a long time.
If you go into this movie expecting any semblance of an intriguing, and deep story you WILL be severely disappointed. Instead, just shut off your brain, and enjoy the robots* fight.
*"robots" as in actually just two robots. Ignore the posters which advertises all the different countries of robots kicking ass, because it just doesn't happen

I will see this movie next week and expect epic fights and great CGI tricks nothing more. Pure popcorn entertainment.

You'd do well not to expect anything more. The movie was clearly intended not to be anything more than popcorn entertainment, and it know exactly what it is, and doesn't try to be anything more. For that I applaud the movie.
I think I even recall Guillermo del Toro saying somewhere he intended for the movie to be cheesy, and full of cliches. He made it to be one big live action cartoon to get your primitive senses giddy.

At least Pacific Rim has the integrity to not put us through an hour of rubbish, and give the people exactly what they want without trying to pretend that's it's deep, or anything otherwise.
It is DEFINITELY better than Transformers.
EDIT: Just wanted to say that there are no tones of hostility in this post as I realized re-reading it it may be interpreted that way. Everything's all cool here guys. Just simply saying something.
Of course JAP would applaud Pacific Rim. The thing that pisses me off the most about that movie is that now a H.P. Lovecraft 'Horrors of the Deep' sort of film can't be made in the next few years without everybody going, "Oh, like that Pacific Rim flick?"
Not like a decent H.P. Lovecraft movie was going to be made anyway. Also, it's impossible that Pacific Rim is going to stay in people's memories for more than a month or so.
So wait. . . Is Chrono a cat now?
