Thanks. The overall vision for the project would be a general sence of realism and historical accuracy. You'd also play for different agents/soldiers on different fronts (with appropriately varying weapons), to show a more broader and detailed look at the conflict from several sides, in order to avert the usual "WWI was only fought in the trenches" stereotype. Missions would be based on or inspired by real historical ones.
As far as the HUD, controls and style of gameplay go, most of it would be recycled from Thief - just re-skinned (like everything else, from the landscape to NPCs) or altered to fit the different setting. The biggest change would be replacing the bow with firearms (two classes - handguns and rifles), using the scripting for guns from Thief's sister game, System Shock 2 (which used the same engine). Fencing and blackjacking would be kept and throwing knives would be probably added (there are already mods for nearly anything in Thief, since there are lots of fan missions based on the original games).
As for the weapons...
Melee and stealth :
Blackjack - or in the mod's case, a "trench-raiding club" (carried over from Thief, used for non-lethally knocking out people)
Short infantry sabre (instead of the sword from Thief, serves as the main melee weapon)
Throwing knives (exist in a mod created by one of the Thief fans - they could be pretty interesting to use)
Firearms :
Class 1 : Handguns (pistols and revolvers)
Class 2 : Rifles (usual and sniper version)
Explosives :
Hand grenades (based partly on the small explosive mines from the original games)
Proximity mines (based on the small explosive mines from the original games)
Mustard gas grenades (based partly on the gas bombs and gas mines from the original games)
Tools :
Lockpicks (carried over from Thief)
Compass (carried over from Thief)
A rag dipped in chlorofolm (a new addition to the arsenal, used for non-lethal neutralization of foes)
Field flask (weaker healing utility, but it's primary function is dousing out open fires and creating additional shadows to hide in - it's essentialy a simpler substitute for the water arrows from the original games)
First aid and medicine kit (main healing utility, partly based on the health potions from the original games)
More will probably be added, but this is the basic idea.
"You... silly Billy !" (Clarence, Penumbra : Black Plague)
