I always liked the concept of Doom: Demons in the future. Can't believe there aren't more games using that awesome idea.

I wonder if the machines in SOMA are purely alien machines, or if there'll be paranormal undertones to their actions. I recall confirmation that the insanity mechanic will return in a modified way - to me, that could mean there would be certain enemies that emit an aura that messes with your perception.

If your protagonist was to have a cybernetic brain, perhaps there could be an electrical enemy who is able to fuck with your controls or make you hallucinate?

Star Wars had all the elements of fantasy, tho, even dragons. If anything, the expanded universe is more fantasy than sci-fi, where a lot of things have little to no scientific explanations.

I think a lot depends on what you consider sci-fi/supernatural. Penumbra doesn't have spaceships or a futuristic settings, Amnesia doesn't have ghosts. Those things alone will label them as not sci-fi and supernatural, respectively, for many people.

And yes, I love the idea of Doom too. It seems to start off so perfectly scientific and WHOA a portal to hell of fucking Mars wtf.
I really hope the enemies in SOMA are not purely aliens. Or robots.

Lol, you are the funny boy.

- The dogs are no zombies - not everyone where you can see flesh is a zombie!

- The spiders are giant, but not everything what is giant is automatically unrealistic. Spiders in the Jura time grew up to a half meter, and even today they can be very big.

- Split-personalities are not magic - they are real!

- Overgrown worms are also real like the giant octopus.

- mutanted ambitions are also real (deformed persons, radioactivity, clones etc.).

Oh man.

And Penumbra is no sci-fi, because the setting doesn't play in the future.

I wonder when Googol will realize that he is universally hated in this forum and leaves.

And yes, I'll admit to being a wrong hipster clown if that will make him leave faster.

Ehm .. while sci-fi stories often happen in the future, it's not 'required'.

I don't hate him. Every community needs a local idiot. :p

P.S. Googolplex is the main writer for SOMA, guys, so that's why he knows that the game takes place in 1984 rather than the future!

Ah, the mighty writer has spoken at last! I beseech you, please enlighten me more with your insider knowledge of SOMA's plot! I can handle the spoilers! Smile

Spoiler below!
SOMA will probably take place within the late 21st century. That's my guess, apropos of nothing other than that the near-future's far more appealing than one I'll never live to see.
