I think you're dismissing multiplayer a bit too soon there. Just because it hasn't been done doesn't mean it can't be. I can imagine Frictional pulling that off quite well so long as it wasn't done in a gamey way - gamey meaning something like "Brennenberg Team Deathmatch" monsters vs Daniel's, that WOULD suck. Imagine a bunch of scattered Daniel's trying to escape some infinitely dynamic creatures though? Maybe you start in cells and must go separate ways to avoid detection and complete a series of tasks before attempting to escape?

First one is really bad, but second one sounds kinda interesting.
BTW, I would love some achievements or secrets in the game. Something to explore apart from the main path.

In the development blog, they have post about grass animations. This got me quite curious. I wonder what kind of outdoor setting will the new game have.

I played Amnesia before Penumbra and thought Penumbra was a little bit more scarier because... idk why it just seemed like it. OR, they can make a game where you wake up and find your town swarmed with grunts, brutes, infected, dogs, and the Worm, and the Darkness. Just combine it all together and try to live through it. No maybe not. Idk, just stating a thought again. I'm sure their next game with be even more amazing.
I'd say the 2 characters thing, each story like 8 hours long, you meet, but don't physically see each other. At the end, you are in 2 different rooms, and like, to escape you need a sacrifice. Multiple endings could happen here.

I've come to learn to not fear the living, nor the dead... But the monsters that hide in closets.

The series (if there were such) should be named The Dark Descent, not Amnesia. Imagine a series of games in which the main character always suffers from that disease...

The way Amnesia made you feel a virtual experience is unique, and RPGs miss much of that feel. Just imagine an RPG in a dark horror setting that really gets to your mood. In most RPGs (and horror games), you are sometimes too bad-ass to actually be afraid of a lair of undead skeletons, for example. Imagine yourself with a sword, entering such a place. What would you feel? Also I'd like to point out that FG put quite a lot of effort on storytelling and the way it is conveyed to the player.
Imagine what FG could do in a RPG world...

Amnesia - The Last Orb
Amnesia - The Final Orb
Amnesia - The Master Orb

Amnesia - The Order of The Black Eagle
Amnesia - Revenge of the Alexander (Just because he disappears does not mean he is dead and as Amnesia universe shows, Agrippa does not even have body and yet he is technically alive).

Amnesia - Alexander's Chronicles (Playing as villain before Daniel did drink the Amnesia potion, telling the background and Alexander's guest to keep shadow at bay long enough to put his plan to fruition).

Amnesia - The Kidnap Simulator (Yeah, no).
Amnesia - Grand Theft Orbs

for multiplayer maybe something like portal 2s co-op mode where you have to solve puzzles and such but always separated and then you have to find a way to comunicate

IMPORTANT NOTE: i've read an interview with Thomas Grip, where he said the next game will NOT be an Amnesia sequel. It doesn't mean there will not be one, but still you'll have to wait.
