AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series
AMD Phenom II X4 3.4Ghz
Windows 8
4 gb Ram

When I boot the game sometimes it stays on a black screen and crashes. The other majority of the time I see a broken screen with a red loading bar at the bottom. The screen looks like the main menu from streams I've watched of the game, but the titles are broken and the only thing I can read is "initializing". When the red bar completes loading that is usually when my game crashes.

Updated drivers.
Verified game integrity through Steam x2.
Reinstalled.
Tried disabling all other running programs.
Tried running as admin.
Tried running in beta.

Similar situation:
Hi, I'm having similar problems of not being able to start up the game. All I got was blank screen for 10-20 seconds, then the error message reads: "Soma.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." But that's all I got. I'm using boot camp mac, with windows 7 installed. 64-bit Intel Core Duo CPU, E7600 @ 3.06GHz. Graph Card Ati radeon hd 4670. Please Help.

Everything looks correct.

Go to My Documents/My Games/SOMA/Main and open [steamid]_user_settings.cfg in a text editor.

Change
FullScreen="true"
to
FullScreen="false"

See if that helps.

[steamid]_user_settings.cfg is not a file on my computer. Of course I used my personal steam ID.
The only things in /Main are _110000103DED3C0, Default, hlp.log, and hpl_update.log. There is a file in my steam location for SOMA thats called default_user_settings.cfg but that file has no option for fullscreen or windowed. I've verified my files, so I have no idea how to obtain the .cfg file you speak of.

That file should be generated as you save the settings in the game. Simply starting it should suffice. Though, since you are crashing as you start it, it might fail to create it.

PS: The "glitchy" loading screen is intentional.
