Solved: 8 Years, 1 Month ago Lightbulb  Are my specs good enough to play Soma?

I haven't had an opportunity to upgrade my PC in some time. It's just not in the finances, cheap as some options may be. But I still find my set up isn't toooooo outdated to play some games. But... I don't really have a basis for understanding some minimum requirements. Like Soma's. Can anyone tell me if the below specs are enough to play? (Some of these I know are enough, but I'm just including ALL my specs so there's no guessing.)

OS: Win7
Proc: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Memory: 4gigs
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800GT
HD: 150gigs free

Mostly the specs I'm unclear on are the Proc, and the Card.

Afraid not.

Technically it will work, if Win7 is 64 bit. You can run the game, in a low resolution with settings low/off. It mainly depends on what you expect, if you are happy running the game in 800x600 or 1024x768 then you should be able to do that in ≈30 fps with low settings.

I'm only estimating based on having used a GeForce 320M and a Radeon HD 4670, which are both weaker than the 8800 GT and with half the VRAM.

Also, according to the nVidia GeForce 8800GT information from the specifications page, it looks like the OpenGL version is 2.1, which is below SOMA's minimum OpenGL requirements (3.3.0).

I cannot tell you if that is Stock or including driver updates, but it is just something to note.

It should support 3.3 through driver updates, I think the specifications always lists the on release support.

So is the graphics card the only hang up in the equation then? (My Win7 being 64bit.) I have access to a "better" card. It's just physically chunky so I've been hesitant to install it- among other reasons, like would it work with my ram. I'm not the most technical minded anymore (despite setting up the rig I'm using over 8 years ago). Zotac GTX275, I think is the card. It's the only branding info I can see on the card other than the Monster ass zalman fan attached to it.

That card is somewhat better, but I think it can be configured with less VRAM than the 8800? So it might be able to run the game with slightly better settings, but if less VRAM you would have to run with lower texture/shadow resolution.

Your computer would be more in the minimum requirements than in the recommended. Can't say for sure but I think with the this card you can expect around 30 fps in 720p, a bit unsure exactly how much you would have to turn down the settings. When I experimented with low end machines the by far biggest boost comes from lowering resolution. In terms of stuttering due to texture loading lowering textures and shadows will have the best impact on improving performance if you have 1GB or less VRAM.

Okie doke. Thanks very much for the help. Smile When I do get around to purchasing Soma, I'll try to remember to report back if it worked. I'll almost certainly report back if it doesn't, looking for additional means of squeezing functionality out of my rig. Wink
