I've never played a horror game before the Penumbra series and later, Amnesia. Thief: Deadly Shadows has an excellent level, Shalebridge Cradle, that is incredibly creepy and scary though.

Amnesia is actually the first game to of ever scared me, so what I consider 'horror' is a bit limited. I'm still investigating Penumbra, mind...

I played Dementium: The ward, and tried playing the second one but gave up in a fit after trying and failing several times to get past the Whisper shadow monster thingies. It wasn't a bad game for the DS, and the story was a bit interesting, but I found it far from being a good game.

Condemned: Criminal Origins was a very under-rated game with horror elements that I thought was pretty good. It involves lots of melee fighting as guns/bullets are extremely rare. You fight mostly with pipes and axes, etc, and have to time your blocks & swings right which could be quite a challenge.

Dark things jump out at you and you hit them with pipes.
