If I pause the game it freezes.

My friend is having the problem not me. He refused to post so I said I would post here for him.

In his words:

"When I get in the actual game and pause it, it freezes. Not just the game; my whole computer freezes. It also disconnects me from Steam.

The game also freezes sometimes when I load it.

I tried putting all the settings on low and VerticalSync isn't on."

He also said the game is fine when he is playing it (except for the pause problem).

3gb ram
AMD Athlon 64 x2 5600+
Nvidia 8500 gt
Windows Vista 32-bit

Any ideas? Anyone else ever have this problem?

Still having the problem and I still don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Try updating the drivers for the graphics card. Also check the control panel for the graphics card, maybe some setting like vsync is in conflict.

I had him reinstall the drivers (correctly) and his game is working fine now. He refused to do it because he had just installed them a couple weeks ago and didn't see the point. Anyways thanks for the help! I appreciate it.
