On a serious note, what I suspect happened is you scripted a path for the grunt, it follows it until it chases you (which could lead it far off its original path), then when you lose it it seeks to return directly to the last path node it was approaching. At least this is what I've seen happen in my map on a consistent basis.

That's why usually you want path nodes every where so the poor thing doesn't get confused like this

I did and still had this happen from time to time. Another reason for this I learned, is so that they will actually chase you into an area... I noticed before I had path nodes placed outside of the patrol route, I could easily escape a close encounter if I ran to a place lacking nodes..as the thing seemed very reluctant to chase me into those areas as soon as I disappeared from sight.
