The dfx plugin doesn't work well for this engine. Use this plugin instead:
http://www.opencollada.org/download.html
Not sure if this is compatible with 2012 yet though.

I use maya 2012. It's the first time I have a problem with dfx. I've imported loads and loads of models. THis is the first one that is giving this kind of error.
OpenCollada can't be used on 2012

Have you imported and exported models with rigs and animations? Those are the issues I've had with dfx before. Can you successfully import the grunt model for example? When I do with the dfx plugin, the skeleton turns into a ball of random joints. :V
