Flowers are outrageously hard to model realistically, and pathogens are... well, invisible. Also it's unlikely that you'll find flowers in the basement of a castle.
Actually, you know what? I'm putting flowers in somewhere.
And you won't know where until you find them... or they find you.

This is actually an urban legend and not true. Spiders are intelligent enough not to accidentally (or intentionally) become ingested by sleeping animals, including humans. Plus, warmth over a certain temperature (like cold under a certain temperature) will kill them, as they are conformers (i.e. ectothermic or cold-blooded... insert evil laugh here). See this image for example (warning, there is a spider in this image):
The bad taste you wake up with is usually the "leavings" of whatever microorganisms lived in your mouth the night before (i.e. bacteria poo, hearkening back to the fear of pathogens mentioned before) and is why the taste is largely dependent upon what you last ate or drank before bed (and whether you brushed your teeth or not).
On a separate note: adding spiders to the first
Prologue map as well, since they seem to be a big hit (and I can't add heights or water, since the map is effectively done). I was looking for a means of "persuading" the player to go somewhere, and spiders sound like the ideal solution.
You have been warned.
