Penumbra crashes every time I try and load

Solved: 8 Years, 9 Months ago Penumbra crashes every time I try and load

OK, so every time I try and load a previous game, the program throws a fit and crashes. This is the specific error:

"penumbra.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in module MSVCP71.dll at 0023:7c3a4f27.
std::basic_string<char.std::char_traits><char>,std::allocator<char>
>::compare()+0020 byte(s)"

And this is the copy of my hpl.log keeps saying my save files are blank. Oddly enough, the log file is right, and that's probably the direct problem. Anyone have ideas why it's not really saving?

Seems like you need to install a Visual C++ runtime

O-kay, I just downloaded and installed the newest Visual C++ Redistributable, and now the game crashes every time I get through the intro. Now penumbra.exe is causing an access violation in itself.

I'm actually running an x64 installation of 7, but I've got a x86 on a separate drive in the same computer. I'll try installing on that to see if maybe that's *part* of the issue. I didn't find anyone else with this issue on the forum, but I don't know how many people are running x64.

Trust me, it's not an issue with you having a 64 bit computer. Did you install the redist for x64 or x86?

Why would I install an x86 package on a x64 machine when I've got the choice between the two? Please, give me some credit at least.

The errors are radically different between the old and new ones - I didn't see any of these the last time around. Now that I look at it, this time it's having issues with XML files.

It seems the installation is either corrupt or that the permissions to read the files are incorrect. Perhaps try to re-install and choose another directory for the installation.
