				Make sure you have the latest game patch installed which is v1.2 and also this which is the latest driver ever released for your old gpu:http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/wi...ng=English 
I don't think it will work though, your graphics card in old for this game.

				I am also getting the ATI-related crash when I open the inventory or journal.  I had the black screen at the start, but solved that by giving amnesia.exe and launcher.exe "run as admin" rights.
 Now, the game will start, but the journal and inventory create the black screen and the crash.
 
 Win7 64 Ult
 AMD Phenom II 965 Black
 XFX ATi Radeon 6970 2Gb
 8 Gb Geil DDR3
 
 Game was installed through Steam, so it has latest patch.  I also have the latest (11.6) Catalyst drivers, and just double-checked...completely up-to-date.
 
 In my Catalyst sys info screen, it has the following for OpenGL:
 OpenGL Version	6.14.10.10834
 
 Not really sure what to try next...help is appreciated.

				The latest OpenGL is 4.1 but the game requires at least 2.1. Run the small program I attached you above and tell me what OpenGL version it detects.

				OK, lets assume that this is a graphics driver problem. Do these: 
1) Download Driver Sweeper  and install it. Do not run it yet. 
2) Uninstall the AMD drivers and all of their components. 
3) Now run Driver Sweeper. Select all NVIDIA, PHYSIX, ATI, AMD, etc traces and if it founds something delete them all. 
4) Reboot your system and then download this(Catalyst 11.6, do not use the latest beta or something else - 11.6 should be fine):

5) After installation reboot your system again. Make sure that in device manager your AMD card appears and try launching the game again.

Hey.
 
I had exactly the same problem as you (11.6 Catalyst installed, ATI gpu, steam install) and I found that turning off vsync in the in-game graphics options fixed this issue for me. 
 
There might be a little bit of screen-tearing; I haven't tried forcing vsync on in the Catalyst Control Center, but that might work if you can't stand the tearing.

				@hardlymotivated -- Well, thanks for the idea and advice, but unfortunately, this did not work for me.  I still get the exact same result...try to go to the journal or any other pop-up screen and the game crashes with a black screen (not to mention that this created some really nasty horizontal bars that would flicker up and down the screen).
 @plutomaniac -- seriously?  Uninstall everything and reinstall?  Why?  Every other game that I have (and this is a long, long list) works perfectly.  What kind of odd code is in the game that would require such an extreme set of actions to correct the problem?  Sorry if it sounds like I'm just pushing back, but really, it sounds like this is a problem for multiple users and that a patch is in order to address it.  I've never had to uninstall all of my graphics drivers and reinstall everything from scratch in order to get a game to work.  I guess that I'm just curious as to what is really going on in there code-wise and how it could cause this problem.

				Well I'm neither forcing you to listen to me nor telling you that this trick will work. Alike almost all other games this one uses OpenGL instead of DirectX and so most people have outdated OpenGL drivers. Manufacturers like Intel do the same as well. They totally forget about OpenGL support at their graphics cards and drivers.
