First of all you need to make sure that your save game is from the same game version. If the game is at update v1.2 and you use a save from 1.1 for example, you may run into problems.

Also, the commentary can be disabled from the main menu options and it does not have to do with the save file itself.

You're probably correct in that the game version is different. I also obviously stated that I was unable to disable the commentary from the menu or the config file.
