I just think they/you are searching too far. This is not about optimizing the gfx, trying to save a few polygons, lower the physic quality or any tweak like that, that would only add a few fps (when it's already running fast) and drop the quality of the game.

Instead, just think about which new element is added in the laggy levels who were not in the previous games neither (probably that ball, but I don't know). It should have it's own classe, and somewhere in this .cpp should have a while/for loop with a badly though exit condition. Ok, you probably know your engine better than I do, but it's my simple debugger advice.
