I was actually planning on making a tutorial on how to make your custom GUI, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Basically, you'll need to have a full conversion mod. The way I found it to work fine was to copy the graphics folder to your mod, then exclude the original graphics folder from the resources.cfg so that the game won't use those instead. As far as I know, there's no softcoded file you can define the GUI textures in, so this is the way I found it to work. Perhaps someone else knows another way, but this one does work fine, it just requires you to include the default textures within graphics in your own mod.
Once you have it copied, just edit the .tga files inside the inventory folder. It's quite easy, just make sure they match up with each other.
