You're not using it right, put it in the public folder and get a public download link from there. Sharing folders with other people was designed to make development projects easier by syncing files, not as a means of release.

Using the public folder and a public download link is a waste of time. The whole point of Dropbox is you can put something in a folder and have it automatically updated on everyone else's computer without having to fool around uploading to an annoyingly throttled and ad-ridden site, and so people don't have to keep checking the link and downloading the latest version. A shared folder which is synchronized to everyone who is subscribed, is an excellent method of distribution; like Steam.
