can you open up Terminal and paste the output of
ls -lR ~/Library/Application\ Support/Frictional\ Games
You can also try completely deleting the amnesia the dark descent folder inside of the SteamApps folder and have steam re-download Amnesia. Also try the Amnesia demo to see if it works correctly.

I had deleted amnesia and downloaded it over again before I posted to the forum initially.
The demo did work, which is why I bought the game.

The demo did work? and you don't have the Frictional Games folder after running the demo?
The demo creates a ~/Library/Application Support/Frictional Games/Amnesia/Demo folder.
So, re-try the demo and ensure the demo runs and creates that folder..
Also, how much free disk space do you have?

I tried to download the demo again after uninstalling the full version but I think that Steam automatically installed the full version again because I owned it. In either case, it didn't run. Console:

That is really strange. the code to create the folder is EXACTLY the same for the demo and the real version other than the name of the Last folder segment (Main vs MainDemo) which is configured via the init-folder.
Try manually creating the "Main" folder and re-running amnesia from steam?

What this looks like is the game crashing out before it creates that folder/log.. Which means it is most likely an issue with steam. As this tells me the game isn't even getting a chance to start. do you ever see the "Apple crash reporter" when the game fails to start? (e.g. http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#...n2123.html )
