I just watched this week's new episode "One Bad Apple", and here are my thoughts. I'll keep it spoiler-free as possible so don't worry if you haven't seen it yet!

I have to say; this is the second time that MLP has surprised me with an episode that I previously thought wasn't going to be any good at all actually turning out alright, the first one being "Sweet, and Elite".

This is also the first instance ever in MLP that my like for an episode instantly took a full 180 degrees turn to the positive mid-episode because of a plot point that was introduced in a matter of seconds. I'll add more to this later.

The premise of the episode is Applebloom's cousin Babs Seed coming to visit Ponyville, and becoming a bully shortly after. When the episode first started, and Babs Seed was introduced I liked her quite a bit. When she turns to bullying however, I first ("First" is a key word here) found this to be somewhat forced, because it seemed to happen nearly instantly without any clear transitioning stage, so it naturally felt to me like a MAJOR pacing problem, and made Babs Seed seem like a very one-dimensional character at the time (Again "at the time" is a key phrase).

Later on in the episode an absolute wham line will be dropped that changed my views completely about the episode in an instant. I won't spoil it, but it will instantly add a layer of depth to Babs' character that you couldn't fathom existed until now. It also makes everything that happened before make a whole lot more sense, and not a one-dimensional development anymore. The line will also add ANOTHER layer of depth to the scene happening at the very moment, because after everyone (Ponies, and viewers alike) know about this aspect it will suddenly become very ironic...at least more ironic than it was already in the first place if you gave it some thought. You will need to give this a minimum of thirty seconds of thought after it's been revealed to fully understand the repercussions this aspect had on each event in the episode.

That's something I always love about much of MLP. More than a few times the "revelation" of an episode will often make perfect sense, and fit in with everything happening before the end. Even though the ending should be predictable under such circumstances, you will ALMOST NEVER see it coming. When you look back after finishing an episode you will look back, and wonder: "That was a very reasonable ending, but why didn't I see it coming when I had no reason not to?" IMO it's all in the execution that it keeps the ending from being predictable, and is one more thing that makes MLP episodes awesome to watch.

Okay, that was a little off topic from the episode. Let's get back shall we?

As for the in-between of "Babs becoming bully", and "wham line", it's actually all fairly average for MLP standards, and nothing too good, or too bad here for the most part. There IS however a new song which I found to be really catchy, and it definitely lives up to MLP's roster of amazing ear candy.

Even with the wham line making light years more sense to most of the scenes, I still found there to be slight pacing issue leftover nonetheless. Also some of the dialogue felt a bit unnatural like it was written for a textbook as opposed to come out of a character's mouth, most noticeably near the very end. These are mostly small tibits though, and I still enjoyed the episode quite a lot.

Verdict AKA tl;dr: "One Bad Apple" is a surprisingly good time that you would be unwise to stop watching after you hate the front half because of the awesome revelation at the end which instantly makes the whole thing great. Maybe not amazing, but great nonetheless. Other problems are minor at most. Also, there is a song in this episode, and its catchy too!

Any sane fan of MLP who watches a decent amount of episodes would never think to yell that in the first place ever XD
