I can only sit here and just see them as normal rocks... When they say "I don't know what their purpose is", I say to myself, "because it's a rock". Am I missing something here?

You might be missing the part where they wouldn't have looked like rocks back in the day, "they were looking at what might have seemed like beautiful, glimmering balls of gold", combined with the history of the city itself, it's a pretty cool discovery. Not expecting the Shadow to turn up any time soon, however
