RE: 4K gaming

Gothic 3 runs very smooth in 4K. But it does no longer support MSAA with the latest community patch. There's just added a separately FXAA option in-game. Same with Amnesia and many other games.

Amnesia stuttered in 4K with 32 SSAO samples. But the difference is not very great anyway.

I would say that you need a powerful graphics card to use 4K DSR. But you have the choice to use a lower DSR factor. A factor of 4,00 means 1080p multiplied with 4.

The options are:

1,20 x
1,50 x
1,78 x
2,00 x
2,25 x
3,00 x
4,00 x

So when your graphics card can't handle a factor of 4,00 then just set a lower one and try the result.

I have a GeForce GTX 780.

RE: 4K gaming

Simply put: 4k requires two times more compared to 1080p.
1920 x 1080p x 2 = 3840 x 2160p aka 4k.
The game you barely ran at 60's will go down to 30's.

No, that's not correct.
4K requires four times more compared to 1080p.
1920 x 1080 x 4 = 3840 x 2160p aka 4K
The game you barely ran at 60's will go down to 15's.

4K has to render the four times amount of pixels compared to 1080p.

RE: 4K gaming

Calculate 1920 x 2 and 1080 x 2, what do you get?
Just think about it, 1080 x 4 would be already 4320p = 8k resolution

The double amount of horizontal and the double amount of vertical pixels means the four times amount of pixels in total, which is four times slower to render.

RE: 4K gaming

You have 4 quadrants...

One 1920x1080 fills up the top left.

One 1920x1080 fills up the top right.

One 1920x1080 fills up the bottom left.

One 1920x1080 fills up the bottom right.

Oh okay, that's complicated, since we're talking about multiplications in multiplications.
But now, four times is a lot, you're gonna need a hell of a gpu or gpus, which have enough vram and clock speed to perform in newest games.

I would not use this method. There's really no point. Works yes, but it's simply not worth the power needed to run the game.

There is absolutely a point to this, for anyone with a PC good enough to do this, you absolutely should.

I do it myself and it helps with alot of things, it's great for AA and does wonders with transparency and masked textures such as particle effects and vegetation.

And NO it isn't as effecient as just running normal AA, but that's not the point here man no kind of current-tech AA will remove all your bad looking jaggies, running max AA settings on a downscaled 4 K, WILL do just that.

All glory to the PC gaming master race, hoo-rah!

Right. As Traggey said, when your hardware is strong enough, you should use it.
I don't use a 4K DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) to a modern game, when I got bad FPS.

But for all other games especially RPGs like Gothic 3, Risen, or Skyrim with a mass of vegetation, it makes sense. The DSR method is more effective than in-game AA. So you don't need extra AA when playing in 4K.
