RE: Most pretentious indie game?

I think that Dear Esther isn't a great game by itself, but it inspired a movement of games trying to tell stories that I think wouldn't have happened without that game. Ether One, Gone Home, Stanley Parable, Thomas Was Alone(?), were all produced from the wake that Dear Esther left.

For that reason, Dear Esther is important. Regardless of how you personally feel about the game.

Surely! Never claimed otherwise, doesn't change my view on the game.

Ooooh, this one

Also, I might get shot with this one but I'd probably add LIMBO to my list as well

When I played through Stanley Parable I took it as a satire of "walking simulators" and LIMBO, I have to be honest I can't see anything pretentious with it.

Indeed, Stanley parable was pure satire and actually did a very good job of it, it was quite hillarious.

Care to elaborate? It was a solid platformer with good atmosphere. The story was pretty meh, but I can't see how it could be seen as pretentious.

I feel like its merit is simply derived from its visual style. You're right in that it has a superb atmosphere, but the story is almost nonexistent and it all feels rather hollow to me. Whereas Dear Esther felt like it was forcing its narrative upon the player, I feel like LIMBO just forced the visuals and environment on you. Obviously I'm not saying it's a bad game nor do I think so but I feel that people act like it's a lot deeper than it is but it's fairly superficial imo.

I felt the same way about 'Don't Starve'.

Destiny, anyone? They promised and hyped with an immersive story and innovative gameplay - the final product got neither of those. And the "Rpg" elements I've heard were a quite flop too. One of the most expensive games to make turned out to be the disappointment of the year, which didn't get better even with the recent dlc unlike they promised.

That's not an indie title, though
