Solved: 8 Years, 9 Months ago Installers won't Install

I downloaded the trilogy from the website, and went to run the installers. Overture installed correctly, but when I went to install the other ones (after backing them up to another drive to be on the safe side) I got these problems:

joshupetersen@Seikatsu:~/Desktop$ sh PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
Verifying archive integrity...Error in MD5 checksums: d3dc45664409614dbdf086b425e72dde is different from ebbdedfae81d8dd3e70b52589ced6258
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:~/Desktop$ sh PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
Verifying archive integrity...Error in MD5 checksums: f87d7d383121de6e5a477df20255acae is different from 902e44ef4d7bad9ebbaa865bbd5578cf

This was actually the second time I had tried to download and run the programs, and I'm pretty darn sure the files downloaded just fine.

I ran an installer from one of the files earlier, one I knew was fine... but when I went back to try and run it again later, I got this:
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ sh PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
Verifying archive integrity...Error in MD5 checksums: dbfb93c1f9429521b20972da92cf766b is different from b935bf51819c941ba2da19ede79e157c

How can I make them work? Do the files not like being copied or moved or something? Do I need to re-download them again and then not move them? (Which would make backing them up to another drive difficult.)

Moving the file around ir copying it will make not difference to the MD5 Checksum.

Can you do an md5 of the downloaded files? (using the md5sum linux command)

md5sum Penumbra*.sh

it should output something like this

20a9536807248e569664ddcd15b5e755 PenumbraOverture-2553.sh
59a515f5d4800c607ef01c8e6d83eca9 PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
d176d522ba39fb2fec6ba95175ca98d2 PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh

Those are the MD5s of the Master installer files on my machine that you should have copies of. (note the md5's that the installer itself is reporting are of the archived files inside)

Check all your "copies" and if the copies are different, then there is something wrong with your system or harddrive. What linux distro are you using? do you know what file system type? (ext3, ext4, reiserfs??)

(Unfortunately, I'm at work right now, so can't do the checksums, but can tell you that...)

I know my filesystem is ext4, actually. I know ext4 is relatively new, does that make a difference?

Oh, and my Distro is Ubuntu 9.04 for 32 bit (did have 64 bit, but switched to 32 when I saw it might have compatibility issues.)

I know there are documented (corruption) issues with Ext4 and KDE. Though I read that they have been fixed. (as I know Fedora 11 just shipped with ext4 DEFAULT out of the box... however my F11 systems are still on Ext3 :-D I'm not a guinea pig today. )

I would suggest downloading them on another system that is not using ext4 and checking the MD5s.. I'm having someone check the files in the store as well JUST to be sure.

The files seems to be OK

59a515f5d4800c607ef01c8e6d83eca9 penumbrablackplague-2567.sh
d176d522ba39fb2fec6ba95175ca98d2 penumbrarequiem-2985.sh

this was on an ext3 file system.

On ext4 Ubuntu, Gnome base... I got this:
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
de987916734c6433acdc3c6eafc3c95e  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
364b2a6f971c56e2412c40dffd413f04  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
5af1d8babf8d060d29c7807521a89d88  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh

Although I have my system dual boot, and there's an NTFS drive that both can see. Do you think I should boot under windoze, download to the NTFS drive, then reboot into Ubuntu and try running them from that drive?

Try, something is making them corrupted when you download so lets start with that.

I would definitely do that.. Then try copying the files over to the ext4 system (via gnome) and re-check the md5s.. if it's STILL corrupting, I'd HIGHLY recommend getting off of ext4 and go back to ext3.

Just an update on the process... games downloaded to NTFS and md5's checked under windows, and the md5's are good.
Head's up.
Now under Ubuntu, I went to the drive I downloaded them to (backed them up under windows, just in case) and copied them to the Ubuntu Desktop. Ran Md5 sums...
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:~/Desktop$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
d9ffa6de661af48044656e89fb2f0f33  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
b50f1b0b3b2ff6a0636204ba00ac959a  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
2d39d4b47bfec4c51da8410be7e4c574  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
Md5 sums had changed.

Now at this point, I went back to NTFS drive I copied them from, and, well, I'll just let you see the whole process...

joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
59a515f5d4800c607ef01c8e6d83eca9  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
20a9536807248e569664ddcd15b5e755  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
d176d522ba39fb2fec6ba95175ca98d2  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ sh PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
Verifying archive integrity...Error in MD5 checksums: a274f3714a84a095d18a5b4e76724fa3 is different from b935bf51819c941ba2da19ede79e157c
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
59a515f5d4800c607ef01c8e6d83eca9  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
ed617a6ceb137d24fb8bca61d3f8e15e  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
e7fbd276e0eba83ee06e281e8b2dabe2  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
As you can see, before touching the files, (only reading them for copy), they were fine. But once I tried to sh them, they get frelled up. Not only that, but of the two not sh'd, one got screwed up, implying that the process of getting the md5 sum screwed it up, or the sh had an overflow issue. Either way, that's kind of a serious issues for ext4 to be causing.

Although I'm not happy about having to reinstall linux again, hopefully this can lead to some needed improvements in future of both what to plan for in the game designing for linux, and maybe something to get fixed in linux.

Anyway, thanks.

P.S.
Seeing Black Plague's md5sum unchanged, I tried again... here's my not-so-successful result:
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5 Penumbra*.sh
bash: md5: command not found
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
5674f7113dbcfa642bb19309ac7383dc  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
ed617a6ceb137d24fb8bca61d3f8e15e  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
e7fbd276e0eba83ee06e281e8b2dabe2  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
5674f7113dbcfa642bb19309ac7383dc  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
ed617a6ceb137d24fb8bca61d3f8e15e  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
e7fbd276e0eba83ee06e281e8b2dabe2  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
As you can see, md5summing again, didn't screw with the values, but shing did. Meaning that, likely, the problem is between sh and ext4, not with md5 and ext4, in case you're interested. (And maybe something for Frictional games to consider in future, .deb's are a bit more reliable than .sh's in installation ease, and the debian based linuxes are increasing in popularity.

Evidently, switching from ext4 to ext3 really doesn't make a difference, as evidenced by this:

On a reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04 i386
This is the files on the NTFS drive (restored from backup elsewhere on same drive)
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
59a515f5d4800c607ef01c8e6d83eca9  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
20a9536807248e569664ddcd15b5e755  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
d176d522ba39fb2fec6ba95175ca98d2  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
Copy to Ubuntu side, then double-check
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:~/Desktop$ md5sum Penumbra*.sh
9553b54f63b38988301b6f404e9d88f7  PenumbraBlackPlague-2567.sh
5764c096fbcef3a910c701cc1676f8bd  PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
cde17a58b11388572f952eb986b4b8db  PenumbraRequiem-2985.sh
My response... Dang. I figured, oh well, try to run straight from NTFS folder....
joshupetersen@Seikatsu:/media/BigDrive/Ubuntu Downloads$ sh PenumbraOverture-1.0.2553.sh
Verifying archive integrity...Error in MD5 checksums: ea22c855950663eba8e0c1f90aebb23b is different from b935bf51819c941ba2da19ede79e157c

Frankly, at this point, I think I have a right to be slightly frustrated. Is there any possibility of getting these in a .deb format?
