Currently using the 185 series drivers and the video/audio devices are not sharing an interrupt. If I kill and restart pulseaudio from the command line, I get the following warnings :

I know bug reports were filled concerning the muted PCM influence on the alsa "output" so I thought maybe this could be relevant. (If I remember correctly, the workaround was to append tsched=0 at the end of a certain line in a certain file...)

Hi,

i think i got it.

First i set the grafik to lowest possible.
And then i was looking every switch i used the game to start.
(sorry for this worst english, but its a long time ago to speak and especially to write)

Now all possible switches are in the highest position.
The game will not run.

But if i chose Texture Quality set to more than low the game wo' nt run.
If i set it to low the game starts normal and i can play it.

Now i have a question:
Are there some textures gone?
Is the game missing some textures in the higher quallities?

My gfxcard is an Radeon Mobility 3400 HD Series with 256Mibs is' nt that enough for this
Game? All other GL games working fine and smooth.

FYI,
If you are running Penumbra on a flat-screen TV (particularly 1080p), Penumbra defaults during first run to 800x600 Fullscreen. My KDL-52V4100 does not take kindly to that resolution so I get a blank screen with a message of "Unsupported Signal....,". That raises the problem of 'If I can't get to the graphic control screen, how can I change the resolution?'.
My solution:

Penumbra copies the default_settings into your user directory as ~./frictional/games/Penumbra/Overture/settings.cfg. The simplest way to get Penumbra to run the first time, assuming your drivers, OpenGL, etc., is correct, is to edit the default_settings.cfg to Fullscreen='false' instead of Fullscreen='true'. This will display in a windowed mode on your deskstop where you can adjust accordingly. After your adjustments (I set mine to 1024x768 which works beautifully on my TV), you can go into the settings.cfg located in your home directory and set Fullscreen to true again.

My default_settings (where the game is installed) /usr/local/games/PenumbraCollection/Overture/config/default_settings.cfg

p.s. My spouse is out of town so I snuck my 'puter downstairs to the BIG TV. I'm gonna hate to give it up!

I've exactly the same problem like the thread starter. Back screen directly after the intro video sequence of Overture. With bad video settings I could see a desktop with a map on it, but the game freezes here. The other games of the Penumbra collection have the same problems, only some tutorial seems to work.

I'm using the graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon X700 and Ubuntu 9.04. I think one problem could be that since Ubuntu 9.04 some older ATI graphics card aren't supported by the original ATI driver "fglrx" anymore (list of affected cards). So you must use the free radeon driver and Penumbra may have some problems here. I use the latest radeon driver version 6.12.2 (8. April 2009).

Yes, pulseaudio is a problem too, but you can easily kill pulseaudio before you start Penumbra. I think you can add this to the start scripts placed in the installation folder.

Has Penumbra a chance on this hardware to run with the radeon driver? Maybe this problem is considered in the new patch in progress?

unfortunately the open source driver does not provide all the required OpenGL extensions. You must use the latest fglrx driver that is available for your card. ATI has just done the "legacy driver" model that Nvidia has been doing for a while.. currently there are 3 releases of the nvidia drives to cover all of their cards.. I know that Fedora (via rpmfusion) provides all three series of drives (latest and the two legacy sets of drivers). Can an ubuntu 9 user check to see if the fglrx catalyst 9.3 driver is available as well as newer drivers (as separately named packages). If not than a request needs to be made to ubuntu to include the current as well as the "legacy" drivers.
