That's pretty odd because here :

Thank you for pointing that out. The answer to the inventory question in the SOMA Info Portal FAQs was written based on the April 2014 alpha demo previews. We're going to reword the answer to reflect the new information, and update the Gameplay subsection accordingly.

I guess the inventory screen will serve only to allow the players to visualise the items they have at any given moment. But when it comes to use the items, they will automatically appear on-screen when/where you need to use them.
