Most people associate it with Metalcore/Deathcore now thats why... And kids who want to be the cool emo kid pretend to like it.
Fucking.
Scene kids.
But yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. It's sad how many people dismiss the entire genre because of the social stigma surrounding it and because of the misconception that so many people have for what emo music really is. Honestly though, American Football, Cap n' Jazz, Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) and other bands that play that same sort of style play some incredibly soothing stuff, usually very heavily jazz inspired actually. It's just a shame to see people dismiss it so easily when a lot of them would probably actually enjoy it.
Actually on the note of emo music, I started getting into these guys recently

In other words... I mainly listen to electronic music as it can be quite soothing. Approaching Nirvana is fantastic, but here's one on MrSuicideSheep's channel. I feel it starts off great, but I don't particularly enjoy the more dubstep parts of the song, though they're still nice. I usually hate Dubstep, but this is more on the calmer side. The beginning is almost mezmorizing and if they stuck to that, it'd be my favorite song, easily. Funny thing, I tried to listen to the original song as this is a remix. I have to say it just sounds so odd... 20 seconds into the original, I went back to this one. Pff, sue me.
Some person named Ramses B made this one. Great speech in the song. It relaxes me. =] Wish I knew what movie it was from though...
