When I start it, the screen turns black for about five seconds, then returns to my desktop, and the resolution is messed up. I don't have root access, so is there a way I can fix it?

I have a 64bit computer, KDE 4.3.5, and Mandriva 2010.0.

Can you provide more details. What video card do you have. What video card drivers do you have installed. And can you attach the hpl.log file that is located in your ~/.frictionalgames/Penumbra/Overture/ folder.

I have an Nvidia video card with proprietary drivers that work fine.

I tried to attach the hpl.log file, but when I clicked "browse" all the files with a "." in front of it weren't shown, so I copied the hpl.log file to my ~/downloads folder.

Looks like you are having issues with your sound. Did you follow the advice in the support DB on using your system provided OpenAL?

(Package names will be slightly different for Mandriva)

I removed the settings.cfg from the ~/.frictionalgames/Penumbra/Overture folder, restarted the game, and it still didn't work.

It says to go into the installation directory and remove some more files, but I can't find the installation directory. Is it automatically created, or manually assigned somewhere?

When you ran the installer you were given a choice of where to install the game..

Usually /usr/local/games/ or /usr/local/ or it could be in your "home directory" as PenumbraCollection.
