You buy through Steam, not rent.
He's making a comment about how he dislikes Steam's DRM. Honestly, Steam is probably the best way I've ever seen DRM deployed. It's like they spent a lot of time trying to make it little of a burden as possible. Granted, that's like saying Steam is the best way I've had my calves torn in two, but I think it's worth noting just how good it is in comparison to things like Ubisoft's DRM.

RE: Size of the game?
The thing is, if you lose your steam account, all purchases are lost too, unless you recover your account. This is the reason why I don't use steam and buy physical copies instead. Yes you can lose the physical copy too but it's by far not the same. In steam, you lose EVERYTHING, instead of just one CD/DVD.
The DRM is not the main problem for me, it's the way steam (in a way) locks your games to be played, purchased and stored online.

I'm more of a DRM-free person, that's why I prefer FG's store. And, I've totally gone to that side, where you only buy DRM-free games. (Except for Blizzard's games, which I love)
But everyone has a different taste.

Guess you never came across latest Ubisoft DRMs.
Splinter Cell Conviction is one of Ubisofts latest games with their DRM, and as I said I only had minor problems with it.

Well yes, buying through online store is fast and easy, but buying physical copy let's you also sell the game forward.

RE: Size of the game?
Well, the site where I took image and news from said that it was sold $2,700. But yes, I should change the post.

Most of them were probably bought at 50% off or more, which means about $1350 or less for a savvy Steam shopper.
