Having trouble with lighting

First stats:
Snow Leopard 10.6.4
iMac5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
ATY,RadeonX1600 256mb vram
1650x1050 display

So I know the game is supposed to be dark. However, after watching the trailers Frictional puts out, and several videos on youtube, I've come to the conclusion that my game is unusually dark. More particularly the ambient lighting for me is essentially non-existent.

I've adjusted by gamma and quality settings several times to see if that makes a difference: it doesn't.The gamma in these pictures is probably 1.5. I Made sure I could clearly see the right gray box. It didn't help, all is did was raise my darkness from a nice black to a gray. Things weren't more visible.

This person on youtube has seen more light in one room than I have the entire game. Things like the details in carpets and tiny items on the ground are things I've never seen, even at the highest gamma and quality settings.

So now the question is how did I get this far, right? Slowly....very, very slowly. I've run out of oil more times then I should, it's getting frustrating. I hardly bother using tinderboxes because the light from the candles isn't enough to help me see anything.
On a side note, I didn't notice this till I saw a video, but those frames I see sometimes are actually supposed to have pictures in them. Mine are black canvases.

Why is it so dark? What's the reason for it? The darkness, that is.

This is an issue with the ATI X series cards that is being worked on.. (Cross-platform bug).

Developing away on one of
Multiple Macs running 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9.
Linux, 8-core AMD, 8GB RAM, Fedora 18, nVidia 450 1GB

Good to know this is being fixed. I'm in a similar boat; it's very hard for me to see anything in the game without using the lantern. Will there be some kind of email notification to users, when a patch is available?

So, I applied that Mac patch... Just tried starting a new game, and found that the game is STILL dark. I'm attaching a screencap inside the small room near where you start out, where you pick up a tinderbox... Note that the candle completely fails to provide useful light beyond the radius of its own glow effect. (I shrank the screencap down to only 25% of the 1440x900 that I play at, because a giant black picture isn't that interesting...)

The Gamma here is set at 1.4, if I recall correctly, and fiddling with it makes no significant difference.

Is it possible the patcher didn't work right? Might it be better to try deleting and reinstalling the entire app?

Go to ~/Library/Application Support/Frictional Games/Amnesia/ and take the hpl.log file and post it here, that way we can check if it is updated.

ok.. looks like the patch did apply correctly.. I'll have to look more into this issue.. I guess the ATI X issue is slightly different on Mac OS X then Sad
