Mark Wrote:I like the original banner. The floor opening/portal/whatever is just too damn bloody. It isn't scary. It looks like fake Christmas cotton "snow" with red on it. And why have a statement or comment? Leave it up to the player's imagination. Everything like that has been said and done, and it just comes off as corny and so last decade.

[Same Old Horror Movie Low Breathy Deep Voice Guy]"In a world...[pause]...where there is nothing...[pause]...but ice...[pause]...something so terrifying...[pause]...is yada-yada, blah-blah..."

You get the picture. Common.

What Penumbra: Overture has going for it is the coolness of the frozen tundra with the rusty metal portal hiding all that horror underneath.

If you "gore it up" too soon, it ruins the anticipation.

Less is more. Leave something to the imagination of the game buyer. Something really scary - but "cool" - like the ice-blue color of sheer frozen isolation and paranoia.

Well, at least my corny idea had something to back it up, if you have an idea, do it... ?

I apologize, Zeno. I didn't mean to be so rude. It was freaky to see the hand come out of the shaft but it looks like another scary movie trailer/blurb. I know you spent a goodly amount of time making it look good and creepy (which it did).

If I were a graphics artist, I would try to do something and show everyone, but now I just feel like an asshole critic. I did try and make some suggestions for a different approach to what potential buyers are going to see.

I think with movies which are so prevalent now like "The Descent" (which was pretty good), the "Saw" trilogy, the Texas Chainsaw franchise, etc., that most gamers are going to be a little jaded and frankly rather tired of seeing the same old approach to marketing horror movies. Gobs of spoilers before you even see the darn thing.

The recent spew of pseudo-"snuff" films turn me off: "Hostel", "Turista", etc. They aren't scary to me. Just cruel. I don't find them frightening - merely disgustingly sad and exploitative.

The Arctic/Greenland scenario is a perfect setting for something new: almost The Thing-like, but, you know, see if something terrifyingly different can happen with Penumbra.

Again, I apologize, Zeno. I didn't mean to criticize your admirable efforts. I guess I just like the color ice-blue and want to make it scare the bejeebies out of people, or something!

Do you want it to link to the Official Penumbra: Overture website, like this? Or somewhere or something totally different?

Please click on the above banner to see the Official Penumbra: Overture website.

(That's what performing this action does...)

Depending on wether you use it as a sig in most forums, the code should be as follows:

[url=http://www.penumbra-overture.com/][img]http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6275/penumbraovlogovm0.jpg[/img][/url]

Which will show:

For HTML enabled forums or on a website:

<a href="http://www.penumbra-overture.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6275/penumbraovlogovm0.jpg"></a>

RE: Hey

If you're on an HTML enabled board I wrote this for a signature for use along with a banner:

Quote:Cross the Penumbra, threshold between worlds; that which protects the fragile light of sanity from the dark, clawing madness of our nightmares. Can you hear its song? Its overture? It sings to you, inviting you... <i>expecting</i> you...

Use it if you like. *shrug* Smile

I wanted to say something about "The first chapter in an immersive horror trilogy" or some such. You know, explain more about what it is. But I think if it's hotlinked to the main page a single click will explain all that. Wink I guess you can always put "The first chapter..." as the alt tag.

Anyway, the code looks like this:
<a href="http://www.penumbra-overture.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6275/penumbraovlogovm0.jpg" style="border: none" alt="Cross the Penumbra, threshold between worlds; that which protects the fragile light of sanity from the dark, clawing madness of one's nightmares. Can you hear its song? Its overture? It sings to you, inviting you... expecting you..."></a>

Or if you want to get fancy:
<table border="0" width=435><tr><td align="middle"><a href="http://www.penumbra-overture.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j247/Rowedekhelicon/banners/penumbra_banner.gif" style="border: none" alt="The first chapter in an immersive horror trilogy"></a></td></tr><tr><td align="middle">Cross the Penumbra, threshold between worlds; that which protects the fragile light of sanity from the dark, clawing madness of one's nightmares. Can you hear its song? Its overture? It sings to you, inviting you... <i>expecting</i> you...</td></tr></table>
(text appears below banner, "First chapter..." is alt tag, and everything's all centered, formatted, and pretty-like ^_^)

RE: Hey

Yeah, so I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but... I'm lazy. Here are a banner and avatar I made for another forum I frequent:

Taken from artwork created by Frictional, obviously, so main credit goes to them. Also I realize these may be a bit larger than some of you may like. I frequent a small, restriction free forum, and some of the other sigs there are HUGE. So If you want me to resize or otherwise modify these in any way just let me know what you need.

Here's how my posts look exactly.

That sig looks awesome. I'd use that probably, but it's too big.

RE: Hey

What dimensions would you prefer? I'll reduce the filesize, too.
