Did you (or steam by itself) update the game to the latest version recently? Maybe the saves differ and that's why the game crashes. That should be fixed though by loading a previous save file before entering the specific area. Your oldest save in still at the same area?

The other option is to walk away and don't deal with agrippa. I think you can do that near the end of the game. The only consequence is 3 possible endings instead of 4. I'm not sure about that though. Probably Jens can help you with this detail.
